The Las Vegas Valley is becoming a unique and dazzling post-modern urban center that itself affords insight into contemporary society as well as a complement to rigorous graduate study. Graduate students at UNLV receive careful mentoring and individual attention. We currently have twenty-eight graduate assistants engaging in a wide variety of professional activities that prepare them for the job market and academic careers. There are year-round teaching possibilities in composition, literature, and creative writing, including upper-division and honors courses. Graduate assistants are also involved in research assistance, journal editing, writing program administration, the hosting of an annual student conference, and non-academic internships. Funds are available for travel to conferences or research facilities, and the department's commitment to work closely with students, guide their research toward publication, and offer a full range of opportunities for graduate students has produced remarkable results as the department's graduate students are being placed in academic positions at or above the national average.
