Graduate Programs
Overview
The English Department offers MA degrees in literature and language
studies, the MFA in fiction and poetry, the PhD in literature with
an optional PhD minor in Composition Studies, and a PhD in literature
with a Creative Dissertation. Application deadlines for all programs are November 1 (spring) and February 15 (fall). The MFA program does not admit students in the spring.
The Las Vegas Valley is becoming a unique and dazzling post-modern
urban center that itself affords insight into contemporary society
as well as a complement to rigorous graduate study. Graduate students
at UNLV receive careful mentoring and individual attention. We currently
have twenty-eight graduate assistants engaging in a wide variety of
professional activities that prepare them for the job market and academic
careers. There are year-round teaching possibilities in composition,
literature, and creative writing, including upper-division and honors
courses. Graduate assistants are also involved in research assistance,
journal editing, writing program administration, the hosting of an
annual student conference, and non-academic internships. Funds are
available for travel to conferences or research facilities, and the
department's commitment to work closely with students, guide their
research toward publication, and offer a full range of opportunities
for graduate students has produced remarkable results as the department's
graduate students are being placed in academic positions at or above
the national average.
Funding for the Schaeffer Ph.D. with Creative Dissertation has been restored effective 2008-09. We have accepted applications for the 2008-09 year, and encourage your interest in applying for this exceptional opportunity for creative writing and scholarship for 2009-10 admissions.
