In this course we will study the development of the novel as a form up to the year 1800, moving beyond Britain in two ways: 1) we will read a handful of texts from other literary traditions (Spanish and French) that helped to shape the English novel 2) we will read English novels that move beyond Britain by featuring stories of travel and exploration. Readings for the semester: Cervantes, Don Quixote; Lafayette, La Princesse de Clèves; Behn, Oroonoko; Defoe, Robinson Crusoe; Swift, Gulliver’s Travels; Sterne, A Sentimental Journey; Smollett, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker; Laclos, Les Liaisons Dangereuses (all readings in English).
