Composition Course Descriptions
ENG 098, Preparatory Composition: Writing-intensive workshop course for students with low placement scores to help them learn and practice college-level critical reading and essay writing strategies. S/U grading only. Credit for this course does not count toward the total needed for graduation. ENG 098 can be taken through UNLV only as a distance education or as a summer session class through December 2008. Other sections of ENG 098 are offered through the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) on the UNLV campus. Both on-campus and distance education sections of ENG 098 will be offered on the UNLV campus starting January 2009. Prerequisite - There is no prerequisite for ENG 098.
ENG 101 and Equivalent Courses
ENG 101, Composition I: Writing-intensive course designed to improve critical thinking, reading, and writing. Students develop strategies for turning their experience, observations, and analyses into evidence suitable for academic writing. Emphasis on short, focused, concretely developed college papers. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 101 is satisfied by one of the following:

Note Regarding CLEP Exams: CLEP exams are administered through the Testing and Assessment Center of the College of Southern Nevada. Advance registration is required; the cost is $60 plus a $30 service fee. At the time the exam is taken, students indicate the school that they want to receive their CLEP test scores. Additional information about the tests can be obtained at the College Board CLEP website.
ENG 113, Composition I for International Students: Course for non-native speakers of English. ENG 113 satisfies the ENG 101 requirement for international students. ENG 113 is the prerequisite for ENG 114; it does not satisfy the prerequisite for ENG 102. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 113 is met by one of the following:
ENG 101E, Composition I Extended 1: The first part of a two-semester sequence of ENG 101. Students use the standard ENG 101 text and complete the first half of the ENG 101 curriculum. The course grade is S atisfactory or U nsatisfactory. Students earn three elective credits. See English Composition Placement Information for more details regarding the ENG 101E/ENG 101F option. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for Eng 101E is an ACT English score of 17 - 20 or an SAT Verbal (or Critical Reading) score of 400 - 500 or demonstration of comparable skills on the first-day diagnostic essay.
ENG 101F, Composition I Extended 2: The second part of a two-semester sequence of ENG 101. Students complete the second half of the standard ENG 101 curriculum. Scores from ENG 101E and ENG 101F are averaged to determine the course grade for ENG 101F. Both ENG 101E and 101F must be completed to satisfy the ENG 101 core curriculum requirement. Students earn three Composition I credits. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 101F is satisfactory completion of ENG 101E.
ENG 113E , Composition I for International Students Extended I: The first part of a two-semester sequence of ENG 113 for non-native speakers of English during which the first half of the ENG 113 curriculum is completed. The course grade is S atisfactory/ U nsatisfactory. Students earn three elective credits. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 113E is met by one of the following:
ENG 113F , Composition I for International Students Extended II: The second part of a two-semester sequence of ENG 113 for non-native speakers of English during which the second half of the ENG 113 curriculum is completed. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 113F is satisfactory completion of ENG 113E. (Note: ENG 113 courses are administered by the English Language Center , CDC 111, 895-3925.)
ENG 102 and Equivalent Courses
ENG 102, Composition II: Builds on the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills students develop in ENG 101. Students learn how to collect and incorporate research material into their written arguments, and how to cite and document research sources. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 102 is satisfied by one of the following:
Alternate Credit: Credit for ENG 102 is earned only by satisfactory completion of the course. There are no exemptions and no alternate ways of obtaining credit. All students must take ENG 102.
ENG 102W, Composition II, Writing Link: A version of ENG 102 that is "linked" to a course in another discipline (for example: Environmental Science, History, Philosophy, and others). The same group of students is enrolled in both classes of a Writing Link set. The objectives and requirements of a linked section remain the same as for other sections, but the two instructors work together to coordinate readings and assignments. The texts for linked sections of ENG 102 are the same as for unlinked sections. Prerequisite for ENG 102W is the same as for ENG 102. ENG 114 , Composition II for International Students: Course for non-native speakers of English satisfies the ENG 102 requirement for international students. Prerequisite - The prerequisite for ENG 114 is satisfactory completion of ENG 113 or ENG 113F. (Note: ENG 114 courses are administered by the English Language Center , CDC 111, 895-3925. )
